Once Upon A Time

This is a poem that I wrote from the perspective of a couple of my friends that have experienced a gut-wrenching heartbreak.
I'm a fan of fairytales, but from some experience of my own and that of others it's a fact that not every story that starts out like a fairytale, will end like one. But that doesn't mean to stop reading fairytales!

Honestly, this poem is one of my favorites because it is SOOOOO metaphor heavy. I love toying and tinkering with literary devices.
Damn, that sounded nerdy. lol
Enjoy.

Once Upon A Time
Once upon a time you broke my heart
You left me alone in the cold and the dark
In this empty castle without the simplest warning
To be with another, leaving me waiting and wanting
I miss the days when you were Prince Charming
But your transformation is utterly alarming
I still sit and wonder how could you do this to me?
How could you change so quickly from beauty to beast?
Broke the glass slipper across my head
Disguised as a wolf sleeping in my bed
Monsters are real. I fell in love with the worst
You scream. You punch. You yell. You curse.
You hurt me, baby, yes you were the first
To break it then leave it then retrieve it then eat it
You took this heart from heaven through hell
The pain rings louder than Catholic church bells
If I were a witch I would cast a perfect spell
To rid you of your pride and the lies you tell
Oh knight, oh knight how your armor does rust
You abandoned the love to pursue your lusts
The potion expired. I now must awaken
You did not rescue. I am completely forsaken
We each blame the other like pot and kettle
We forgot the way home like Hansel and Gretel
Once upon a time and far far away
Love dripped blood and tears on the page
Call the kings horses and call the king’s men
To put my broken heart back together again
Oh lover, oh lover, why didn’t you tell me back then
That happily ever after would feel like THE END
